The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Its Resources

The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is a federal agency that was established in 2011 in response to the Great Recession. The CFPB’s mission is to “make markets for consumer financial products and services work for Americans” In other words, the CFPB exists to protect consumers from being taken advantage of by financial institutions.

The CFPB has a number of resources available to help both buyers and sellers understand mortgages and the mortgage process. These resources include:

A Mortgage Shopping Worksheet – This worksheet helps buyers compare different lenders and loan offers so that they can get the best deal possible.

A Mortgage Payment Calculator – This calculator helps buyers estimate their monthly mortgage
payments. An Ask CFPB Tool – This tool allows users to submit questions about mortgages and the mortgage process, and receive answers from CFPB experts.

A Glossary of Mortgage Terms – This glossary provides definitions for common mortgage terms, so that buyers can understand what they're reading when they're looking at loan offers.
A Guide to Pre-Qualifying for a Mortgage – This guide walks potential borrowers through the pre-
qualification process so that they know what to expect.

These are just a few of the many resources that the CFPB has available on its website. For more
